Microsoft try now – where to with the ‘new’ Outlook

Many will have noticed the new ‘try now’ option being offered in the Outlook desktop client. Activate the toggle and be taken to a glimpse of a new version of Outlook which is centered around the existing web client.

This new version will bring some benefits to the table, the biggest of which is that the new add-ins will work seamlessly across platforms and devices allowing users to get the same experience from a mobile phone as they do a desktop or web client and irrespective of which underlying operating system is in use. Sounds great, but making an early switch will leave you wondering where all the functionality went.

Easily switch to the new version by toggling the ‘try now’ option and you will learn more about the limitations of new version which looks for deeper cloud integrations being web based. Whilst this may be desirable for some companies there are still some hurdles to be overcome on basic features like allowing a prompt to send option, filing multiple messages or drag and drop functionality. Not to mention those companies who wish to retain full control and ownership of their data.

We are actively working on a web addin, which is being developed in parallel to ongoing development and support of our existing fully featured addin.

You might ask why we continue to invest in both – Outlook in its current form remains the mainstream version and will continue to be so until at least September 2024 according to the latest information available. Not only this, but there is no end of life date set for the current version of Outlook and we are told by reliable sources that the current version is still being actively developed. It is likely that the existing version of Outlook will remain supported for enterprise customers for the years to come.

The new web based add-in will be used to compliment our existing eFiler+ desktop solution which is feature rich and can offer all the benefits and features long standing users of eFiler have come to enjoy. It is envisaged that there will be no additional cost to existing eFiler+ subscription users.

.eml or .msg the choice is yours

eFiler v.4.3 sees the introduction of the option to save your emails in either .eml or .msg file formats. While .msg is native to Outlook and has always been the go to for eFiler we can see the benefits of .eml which can also be opened and returned to Outlook without any 3rd party tools. eFiler+ subscription users can now switch to .eml if they prefer.

.eml files can also be easily previewed in Google chome or even in Windows Explorer once you have applied a small registry change.

What happens if I want to switch formats? No problem – eFiler+ search will provide results from both .msg and .eml files so there is no need to convert previously saved .msg files.

Installer cannot continue, Outlook is not installed?

When running the installer it may tell you that you require a valid installation of Microsoft Office. This usually happens when the customer has installed the Outlook App from the Microsoft Store rather than installing the desktop version of Office. Installing the desktop versions of Office ensures you get the full functionality and are able to install eFiler. If you have the full versions installed you will find the shortcuts will point to a folder/sub folder in one of the follow paths –

C:\Program Files (x86) – where Office 32 bit is installed

C:\Program Files – where the 64 bit version of Office was installed

Very high res display causing issues with apps? Get DPI Aware.

If you have recently bought a new computer which supports very high resolution displays you might find that many of your applications look strange, with scrunched up text and maybe even menu items missing or just with everything so tiny you can’t see what’s going on.

The solution is to create a custom profile for each affected app to allow for dialogs to be displayed at lower resolutions without having to drop the resolution for the whole system.

Here’s a Microsoft Forum entry that tells you how to do it.

Both the Registry key and manifest file you need are available on request. Just double click the Registry key and copy the manifest file into the same folder as eFiler.exe and restart Outlook.

Uninstalling Office cleanly

Sometimes Office gets in a muddle and needs re-installing. Simply uninstalling from Control Panel leaves behind folders and registry keys which you may need to purge in order to get a clean installation of office back onto your computer. Microsoft has a nifty tool for this a link to which follows –

Emails stuck in Outbox or Emails won’t send?

Sometimes when your computer has resumed from hibernation / sleep mode, or has just simply lost its connection to the internet you might find outgoing emails getting stuck in your outbox and failing to send.

There are 2 common fixes to this issue –
1. Check that Outlook is ‘Online’. To do this go to your send and receive ribbon in outlook. Look for the icon ‘Work Offline’ and make sure it is not highlighted. If Outlook is offline you will often see this status displayed at the bottom right hand corner of Outlook. If ‘Work Offline’ is highlighted simply press it again to go back Online! In older versions of office the work offline function can be found under the ‘File’ menu.

2. The second most common reason is that an email is simply stuck in the Outbox. You may need to cancel the current send/receive status. Next move the stuck emails into drafts. Restart Outlook, then open each draft and send one at a time.

3. Lastly check that your mailbox has free space. Delete some old emails by selecting them with SHIFT-select and then delete to permanently delete some emails and make some space! Why not check out eFiler as a way to stay on top of your mailbox on a daily basis!
